The Dallas Cowboys received devastating injury news concerning their All-Pro cornerback, Daron Bland. Bland is set to have surgery to repair a stress fracture in his foot that will sideline him for roughly two months. This will likely force some creative roster adjustments and perhaps the addition of a free-agent veteran like Patrick Peterson or Xavien Howard, who are both still available. That said, the loss of Bland and his 14 interceptions over the last two seasons really can’t be replaced. Or can it?

Jerry Jones and Cowboys Nation saw another ball hawk and All-Pro cornerback, Trevon Diggs, suffer a season-ending injury in 2023, which paved the way for the revelation that Bland was an interception machine. Bland made a name for himself almost immediately in his rookie campaign as a 5th-round pick by showing great instincts and quickness during the 2022 training camp. He later displayed his ability to attack the ball in the preseason and earned legitimate stripes on the field. Speaking of 5th-round picks, enter Caelen Carson, the likely replacement for Bland and another player who has stood out in his rookie campaign. The Cowboys’ front office has struck gold in the draft multiple times, and I believe Carson is another potential gem. Carson is instinctive and aggressive—two traits every defender needs in this league. He was drafted under the Zimmer regime, and with Bland out, Carson will have every opportunity to showcase his talents on the field.
