An astonishing dangle that led to the “Golden Goal”
Relentless brilliance from a team that refused to lay down.
The dramatic finish to the quest for gold will go down in history as one of the most memorable moments ever for women’s hockey, or just hockey in general. Megan Keller arguably had an iconic moment that could never be duplicated.
The 2026 Team USA Women’s Hockey Team is now etched in stone as the most prolific hockey team in Olympic history. Not once did they beat Canada during this tourney, but twice. The American didn’t allow a goal for 352 minutes and 17 seconds in this year’s winter Olympics. Outscored the opposition 33-2, and 7-1 against Canada.
Today’s Gold Game was like something written straight out of a movie, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if there is a movie written about it in the near future, like the classic 1981 flick, Miracle on Ice.
This was a battle that was evenly matched from the get-go, with both teams feeling each other out throughout that 1st period. The board was scoreless until Kristin O’Neill sent one past Aerin Frankel on a shorthanded bullseye goal, giving Canada the upper hand first.
3rd period, both teams were getting good shots off on both goaltenders that were playing magnificently. It got hectic for Team USA with a little over two minutes left when Coach Wroblewski decided to boldly pull the goalie. It paid off dividends.
Laila Edwards sent a bullet of a wrister that was tipped in by Hilary Knight, tying the game and sending it into overtime.
Overtime rolls around. Team Canada went into “panic mode”, running out of steam right when USA clicked and turned the jets on. The Americans knew they were tired and caught them slipping on a brutal line change. That is when Taylor Heise launched a picture-perfect pass from behind USA’s goal line to a wide-open Megan Keller, two strides’ aways from Canada’s blue line. As soon as the puck hit her stick, it was game over.
Keller turned the afterburners on bolting directly at the goalie. She could sense Claire Thompson on her heels as she was flying at mach speed. So she hit the brakes and dragged the puck right through Thompson on one of the most beautiful dangles anyone has ever seen in the Olympics. Keller then proceeded with a backhander.
Five-hole for the game-winning golden goal.
There couldn’t have been a better script to end this ongoing feud between Canada vs the USA, and there couldn’t have been a better way go out on top to end a legendary career run for Team USA’s Captain, Hilary Knight.
Hilary Knight is now tied with Nicole Bullo and Michelle Karvinen of Switzerland for having played the highest amount of games (29) in Olympic history for women’s hockey.
Knight also broke the US Women’s Hockey record for most career goals (15) and points (33). All occurred during her very last game during the battle for gold in her legendary Olympic career, making her run the most epic in career.
Team Canada’s Marie-Philip Poulin also set the record for the greatest number of games played (27) in Olympic history by a Canadian woman, as well as recording the most goals (20) in Olympic history.
While Poulin is unsure if whether or not she will continue her prolific journey to compete, Hilary Knight has her mind made up that she is willing to pass the torch and retire on the throne as the greatest American woman to ever do it. This being her last appearance in the Olympics.
Six teams. One goal. Gold Medal.
The American dream was fulfilled by a group of distinguished female athletes who persistently pushed through the flames of fury, and now claim the throne of victory with the possession of gold for the next four years until they will have to defend their position at the top.
