An absolute cinema in Milano Cortina with an unforgettable overtime win for Team USA over Team Canada that was pure magic.
Today, a new sequel for the American classic film “Miracle on Ice” has been written in real time. And a game well worth the “early bird get up” for every American who set their alarm clocks to tune in.
Team USA was a huge underdog prior to this matchup, which is completely understandable. Team Canada had assembled a team unlike anything anyone could ever imagine as for having the most nonsensical amount of talent that could possibly be placed on one team.

After scoping this roster, anyone that watches hockey should be able to comprehend why Team Canada was the favorite to win the gold. A high hockey IQ isn’t needed to understand how deep this roster is, and how much of a meaningful victory this is for the Americans.
Matthew Tkachuk knew what this game meant to the fans and players for both the USA and Canada:
“It’s best on best. It’s what every American and Canadian grows up watching. Grows up caring about. This is the pinnacle of the sport. This is as good as it gets, and a rivalry as good as it gets. So, there will not be one TV without this game on in the United States.”

The Canadians put more than enough shots on net, but Hellebuyck wasn’t letting anything past him. MacKinnon missed the net three times including a wide-open shot that might’ve sealed the fate for the Americans, but he wasn’t able to connect. Devon Toews also had a chance to bury one right on the doorstep, but Hellebuyck denied access with a miraculous save using his stick to brush the puck from behind his back before it crossed the goal line. The Canadian fans couldn’t believe what they had witnessed, neither could the Americans.
As for Connor McDavid, he only had two shots on net. One was on a clean breakaway that was denied. McDavid wasn’t much of a threat or a factor and has now lost to the Tkachuk’s in three straight championships, not counting the 4 Nations Tourney. That’s got to hurt, especially as a Canadian.
In the words of Matthew Tkachuk, “Always the bridesmaid, never the bride.”
Team USA got themselves in a precarious situation on a shorthanded 3-5 power play against Canada and killed it with authority, which is damn near impossible to do facing a terror squad to this magnitude. Team Canada outshot the US 42-28. Outplayed Team USA the entire game, and the MVP of the game, Connor Hellebuyck only let in 1 goal on 42 shots.
Simply amazing.
With so much talent on the ice, it was great to see the family ties and unbelievable plays from a new generation of players during the 2026 Olympic Games. Seeing two pairs of brothers (Tkachuk & Hughes) battling during a championship at this level on the world stage is very rare, and such a great thing to be able to witness. The same goes for Brock Nelson competing as a 3rd generation gold medalist.
A Family Affair with the Nelson & Hughes Family:
Jack Hughes had a once in a lifetime opportunity to become a true American hero. And he did just that by scoring the golden goal in overtime to beat Canada at their best game. The legacy of the Hughes bloodline will continue for several decades at this rate.
Ellen Hughes, the mother of Jack Hughes and Quinn Hughes, had a full circle moment after she also won a gold medal as a consultant with the USA Women’s Team on Thursday with Team USA Women’s Team. The day after, her son Quinn Hughes scored the overtime game winner that sent Team USA to the semifinals, and the day before her victory with the women’s team, Jack Hughes scored 2 goals to help send Team USA to the finals.
Back in 1992, Ellen Hughes also won a silver medal as a member of the 1992 USA Women’s Olympic Team. It’s safe to say that the Hughes family is one of the few ultimate hockey families that have been dominating for decades that aren’t strangers to winning.
The other American hockey family that rings bells across in the hockey world is the Nelson/Christian family. Brock Nelson for Team USA played a significant role as a part of the team’s successful journey to become a gold medal champion.
Brock’s grandfather Bill Christian and great uncle Dave Christian won the gold medal for Team USA in 1960. Dave Christian also won the gold in 1980, and now with Brock bringing home the gold, his family is now rocking with four gold medals. One other interesting fact about Brock is that he wears number 29 as a tribute to Bill who wore number 6, and Dave who wore number 23 during their playing days. What an awe-inspiring way to carry the family’s legacy, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if Brock’s offspring were to wear number 58 to keep the family tradition going.
As the new generation would say, the last time Team USA won an Olympic gold medal in hockey was in the late 1900s in 1980.
A sensational finish for Team USA has now broken a 46-year-old curse, and a vast majority of their success came from their PP penalty killing unit as well as goaltending. The US was flawless locking down Team Canada going 17 for 17 on the penalty kill and will go down in history as one of the best defensive performances ever for Team USA during the Olympics.
Jack Hughes was ecstatic with the ending results and couldn’t be prouder to be an American:
“This is all about our country right now. I love the USA. I love my teammates. It’s unbelievable. The USA hockey brotherhood is so strong. And I am so proud to be an American.”

And to top it off, the most purposeful moment came after the game when Zach Werenski and Dylan Larkin went into the stands to grab Johnny Gaudreau’s children out of the stands to include them in a team picture to present their gold medals. A bittersweet moment for Johnny’s parents who were also cheering on Team USA from the stands with Johnny Hockey’s children.
An unbreakable bond that led to a monumental victory.
Add that to Team USA’s most illustrious undefeated run in Olympic history.
Never to be forgotten.
