The Colorado Elevation Continues
The Colorado Avalanche front office continues to make the right moves, restructuring the roster and bolstering their depth in a season full of changes. The acquisition of Mackenzie Blackwood and Scott Wedgewood has provided the stability in net that Colorado desperately needed. However, the biggest shake-up came in the form of an unexpected three-way blockbuster trade a little over a month ago.
In the deal, Colorado acquired a 2025 second-round pick, a 2026 fourth-round pick, Martin Nečas, and Jack Drury from the Carolina Hurricanes, sending Mikko Rantanen to Carolina. While Mikko will always hold a special place in Avalanche history, having played 619 games and tallying 681 points (287 goals, 394 assists) since being drafted by Colorado in 2015, the trade has already paid dividends for the Avs.
Nečas Making an Immediate Impact
For many Avalanche fans, the best part of the trade has been the seamless transition of Martin Nečas into the lineup. Since his arrival, Nečas has been nothing short of spectacular, outperforming Rantanen’s current production in Carolina and becoming a key factor in Colorado’s offensive success.
Nečas himself has been vocal about how Nathan MacKinnon’s leadership has helped him elevate his game to another level. The chemistry between the two stars has been evident, with MacKinnon praising Nečas for creating more scoring opportunities on the power play, saying:
“It’s just a different setup, I think. I’m going to the net a little bit more with Nečas.”
MacKinnon further praised his new teammate, adding:
“I think we have a similar style of game. We both like to carry it off the rush, we’re both righties. I think we both think similarly, so we can anticipate where each other will be on the ice. He’s a dynamic player, he’s amazing, and it’s been good so far.”
When one of the best players in the world gives you that level of recognition, it’s a huge boost to confidence and a sign that Nečas is embracing the championship mindset.
Nečas Thriving in Colorado’s System
As time passes, both players and fans are beginning to see exactly why Colorado pursued Martin Nečas. His style of play fits perfectly with the Avalanche’s high-paced, possession-heavy system, allowing him to seamlessly fill Rantanen’s role.
Statistically, Nečas has climbed into third place in team scoring, posting 20 goals and 48 assists, trailing only:
- Cale Makar (22 goals, 46 assists)
- Nathan MacKinnon (23 goals, 70 assists)
That alone speaks volumes, considering Makar and MacKinnon are widely regarded as two of the best players in the world at their positions.

Coach Bednar’s High Praise
Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar has been thrilled with Nečas’ play, saying:
“Offensively, it’s just a little bit different style. It fits Marty really well. The identity of the line that Drury’s playing on is very similar to the line that he played on there. They don’t have a lot of questions, and they’ve played really well in those games. So, both helping us on the offensive side of things and on the defensive side.”
With high praise from all the right people within the Avalanche organization, this team is poised for another deep Stanley Cup run. As the playoff atmosphere starts to build, Nečas and company are finding their rhythm at the perfect time.
